I was born Douglas Smith in New York City on February 7, 1964—the day the Beatles landed in America. In the mid-70s, my family moved to California, and I’ve cherished the state ever since. From a young age, I was struck by the beauty and complexity of Los Angeles and the promise it held. I like to think I carry a New York state of mind with a California soul—outspoken yet laid back, always willing to face a challenge. To me, Southern California represents a culture of achievement, innovation, and diversity—from film and tech to agriculture and aerospace.
After high school, I moved to Hollywood while attending UCLA and Otis Parsons, eventually building a 40-year career as a stage manager in television. I’ve called Reseda home for the past two decades, raising a family and pursuing music across the U.S. and Europe with indie bands. I’m proud to have been part of some of the industry’s most recognized events—award shows, Olympics, and conventions—while also serving three terms on the Directors Guild of America Council. I’ve fought for union labor, fair wages, and stronger protections, chairing committees to modernize our union and give members a stronger voice through initiatives like MorePerfect.blog.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I advocated for keeping members employed, even when it wasn’t popular. I stood firmly for what I believed was right, including opposing a DGA contract I felt betrayed our sister unions. As artificial intelligence reshapes our industry and society, I believe we must get it right—not just for jobs, but for the soul of our work. I’ve served my colleagues with dedication, and I intend to bring that same commitment to the people of California’s Congressional District 32—if I’m so lucky.
